Viacom on Tuesday launched the most serious challenge yet to YouTube, suing the Google-owned internet video site for “massive intentional copyright infringement” , asking a federal court for more than $1bn in damages.

The media company is also requesting an injunction against YouTube to prevent it from further infringement, a condition – if granted - that could call into question the site's ability to operate.

Copyright lawyers suggested that the court was unlikely to comply with such a demand.
